Why Survivor Shield?

At Survivor Shield, we believe in the power of real conversations that lead to real results. What sets us apart is our commitment to genuine, survivor-centered support. We accomplish this through our Pathways program, which provides no-cost, one-on-one, peer-support sessions.

This one-on-one approach allows for individualized focus on coping skills, attainable goal setting, and your self-care efforts. Compared to the more typical peer-support groups you may find elsewhere, this approach also helps ease some of the fears of sharing - while you are still sharing with a peer, and getting all the benefits of doing so, you will only be sharing with our professional facilitator in a private setting.

Our session facilitator, Rebecca Black, is a survivor herself. With years of experience in her own healing journey, and in various roles where she helped survivors of trauma understand and navigate their daily challenges, Rebecca brings a significant depth of understanding and empathy to each session. Here, you’re not just heard; you’re understood, supported, and empowered to heal.

The Pathways sessions provide peer support, which can help anyone tackle daily struggles brought on by trauma. Pathways is NOT therapy. Our facilitator is not a therapist.

  • In the event that our facilitator believes that the Pathways program is not a good fit for any individual, referrals and recommendations will be made to other programs and professional services.

  • Sessions are scheduled for 30 minutes. A five minute heads up will be given. Sessions will end on time so that our facilitator can be properly prepared for the other one-on-one sessions in the day. If more time is needed, you can visit in another week.

  • There is no expectation for a minimum number of sessions that you will attend. There is no commitment to continue to attend sessions. There is no specific number of sessions you should attend to attain any particular goal - everyone is different.

  • You can attend one session per week, and up to twice in a row. We recommend scheduling every other week, or scheduling an “off week” between sessions, whichever works best for you. The time in between sessions is valuable for you to complete self-care and the encouraged work between visits.

  • Like in any other peer support environment, our facilitator will not keep notes or any sort of file regarding your sessions. Part of your goals and expectations going into this would be to track what you want to work on, any encouraged assignments, and achievements/setbacks. Please plan to have some way to take notes for yourself for each session.
